Mediaprinting: Identifying Multimedia Content for Digital Rights Management

The explosive growth of multimedia content on the Internet is revolutionizing the way of content distribution and presenting new challenges to content security and copyright management. However, two major approaches used in the past decades, namely encryption and watermarking, are inadequate to cope with the change. This article describes a third approach, referred to as mediaprinting. The key idea is to extract a robust descriptor from media content, called mediaprint, to identify the content. Then, the mediaprints of reference (e.g., copyrighted) media content can be used to verify the content that may be illegally distributed and shared on the Internet. Compared with the proactive approaches (i.e., encryption and watermarking), mediaprinting enables a retroactive but reproducible and reliable way to manage the copyrights of multimedia content. Besides, Mediaprinting plays a fundamental role in a wide range of applications such as content filtering, monitoring, and semantic linking in cyberspace.
