Experiences inside the Ubiquitous Oulu Smart City

Over the past few years, several cities around the world have built urban information and communication technology (ICT) infrastructures to enhance and facilitate communication between citizens and the government, with the goal of improving the quality of life. The UrBan Interactions research program, coordinated by the University of Oulu is one example where the city has created a middleware layer on top of the panOULU wireless network and opened it up to UbiComp researchers. In this paper, we present our experiences while developing innovative services that are being deployed within the Ubiquitous Oulu infrastructure as part of UBI Challenge 2011.
